The thermodynamic limitations and elevated energy consumption associated with conventional desalination technologies have underscored the necessity for innovative methodologies, such as directed solvent extraction (DSE). This study investigates the desalination of brackish water utilizing octanoic acid as a solvent. Critical variables, including initial salt concentration, contact time, and the solvent-to-aqueous phase volume ratio (ranging from 0.5 to 1.5), were analyzed for their impact on extraction efficiency. The results demonstrate that the system approached quasi-equilibrium after 140 minutes, indicating that mass transfer may be predominantly influenced by molecular diffusion resistance. Furthermore, the increase in solvent ratio exhibited a nonlinear relationship with extraction efficiency. The optimal operational configuration was identified at a volume ratio of 0.5, which yielded the highest solvent consumption efficiency index. This research elucidates the mechanisms involved in the DSE process and establishes a framework for the design of energy-efficient desalination systems.
