This study numerically investigates the effects of spring wire and twisted tape turbulators on the thermo-hydraulic performance and fouling behavior of vertical thermosyphon reboilers using validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Spring wire inserts with pitch spacings of 50, 76, and 95 mm and twisted tape inserts with pitch spacings of 150, 190, and 225 mm were evaluated over Reynolds numbers of 7000–20,000. Key performance indicators, including the heat transfer coefficient, subcooled length, pressure drop, friction factor, thermal performance factor (TPF), and fouling thickness, were analyzed. The primary objective of this study is to provide an efficient numerical approach for identifying the optimum turbulence promoter based on thermo-hydraulic performance and fouling mitigation in vertical thermosyphon reboilers. The key finding of this research is the identification of the 50 mm helical wire insert as the most effective configuration, offering the highest thermal performance factor together with approximately 52% fouling reduction. These findings provide practical guidance for the optimal design and performance enhancement of industrial heat exchangers in petrochemical and refinery units.
