Hydrogen is considered one of the most promising clean energy carriers owing to its high gravimetric energy density and carbon-free utilization. Among various hydrogen production routes, sodium borohydride hydrolysis has attracted considerable attention as an efficient method under mild operating conditions. This review comparatively evaluates the performance of Ni- and Co-based catalysts supported on different carbon materials, including carbon quantum dots, graphitic carbon nitride, and carbon nanotubes. The results indicate that the support type and active phase characteristics significantly influence particle dispersion, porous structure, and catalytic performance. Reported studies indicate that catalysts based on carbon quantum dots demonstrate relatively higher activity, with a hydrogen generation rate of 28751 mL min⁻¹ gcat⁻¹ and an activation energy of 25.48 kJ mol⁻¹. Nevertheless, challenges associated with catalyst stability, particle agglomeration, and scalability remain major obstacles to practical applications.
